Mershon at the Maple Grille, more ways to help us.

Here’s a small revision to what you already know.  You can come to this event any time after 11 a.m.  The Maple Grille of Hemlock, 13105 Gratiot Road (M-46), Hemlock MI 48626, has graciously offered to support our Chapter's coldwater conservation work. The date of the gathering is Wednesday, December 05, 2018, nominally from 4:00 pm until closing, but you can attend any time during the Grille's regular hours of operation. A portion of the proceeds from the whole day will be donated to the Chapter. There will be no program, raffles, or prizes—only great food,  and beer. The Maple Grille’s website, www.TheMapleGrille.net, shows a typical daily bill of fare.
No reservations are accepted, and food is served only until it’s gone, so plan to get there early. The Mershon Officers and Board of Directors look forward to a convivial day of feeding, fellowship, family, and fishing tales with friends.

Redd Survey on South Branch of the Au Sable
We members of the Mershon Chapter are asked to help with brown trout redd survey on the south branch of the Au Sable again this year. This survey on the south branch is coordinated with a similar survey on the main branch by the Mason Griffiths Founders Chapter of TU, and another
survey on the north branch by Anglers of the Au Sable.
The purpose of this message is to let you know our plans for the south branch survey.  The dates are Friday, 02 November, and Saturday, 03 November.   Please contact Chapter Director Howard N. Johnson at hnjohnson@aol.com , or 989-280-0381 if you wish to have more information.
If you have not helped with this project in the past… here is what we are asking for help with: wade (with other volunteers) a one to two-mile section of the south branch to inventory brown trout redds.  Each redd location will be measured and the GPS coordinates will be recorded.  It will take about one-half day to complete the survey in each river reach.
The location and size of spawning trout redds provide:
·       DNR Fisheries an estimate of the female trout population
·       Yearly averages of redd sizes identifies trends of fish size
·       Identifies protective cover needs
·       Identifies productive and non-productive river reaches
The survey on the south branch will follow the same guidelines and procedure that Gerry Lake has been doing on the north branch for decades.  Gerry will be helping with training of new volunteers, and others from MGFTU Chapter will give us a hand, too.

Again, if you want additional information, contact Howard at hnjohnson@aol.com ,  or 989-280-0381.

Please tell anybody you know who might be interested in this project, and thank you.
